He doesn't know what to "Believe."
Paul Giamatti told "The Howard Stern Show" on Wednesday that Cher has been trying to get in touch with him for an extended period of time, and he has absolutely no idea why.
"Every now and then, I get a message from somebody that says Cher really needs to talk to me," he said. "Like it's important, like it's crucial that she talks to me. And I'm like, what the - why does Cher want to talk to me?"
Giamatti told host Howard Stern that "nobody will tell me" why the "Strong Enough" singer wants to speak with him, and then he'll "never hear anything" until a year passes and it happens again.
"I don't know what she could possibly want to talk to me about," he said. "It's killing me. I'm dying to know what she wants to talk to me about."
Giamatti told Stephen Colbert on "The Late Show" in November that Cher is his dream guest to have on his podcast "Chinwag." At the time, Giamatti also told Colbert about how his agents kept saying that Cher "really needs to talk to" him over the course of "a couple of years."

"I'm like, 'What the (expletive) is going on with Cher'?" Giamatti asked before looking directly into the "Late Show" camera and saying, "Cher, it's Paul Giamatti. If you're watching, baby, I'm here."
But the "Holdovers" star may be inching closer to a solution. He told Stern that after somebody from his podcast got in touch with Cher, the singer called him and left a message.
"All she said was, 'I hear you want to talk to me,'" Giamatti recounted. "That was it."
Giamatti was perplexed, so he called Cher back and left a message saying, "That's great, I'd love to talk to you, but I thought you wanted to talk to me?" This, according to Giamatti, was the last he ever heard from her.

Though the mystery persists, Cher is on record as being a fan of Giamatti's work. In a March 2022 post on X, formerly Twitter, she praised him and Laura Linney for their "TRULY OSCAR WORTHY" performances in the HBO miniseries "John Adams."
Then again, it's possible there's a misunderstanding at play. After all, Stern told Giamatti that "every once in a while," he similarly gets a message from his agent saying that Giamatti needs to speak to him, yet the actor seemed confused and clarified he only tried to reach out to Stern a single time.
"It's not me," Giamatti told Stern. "It's gotta be somebody else."
